TX State Crit Stories

In racing there is nothing I absolutely enjoy more than when a race is held in riding distance from your house, especially if it is the Age Based State Championship at The Driveway in Austin!
I rolled out of bed at 11:30 AM, ate some breakfast/lunch, and got dressed to ride out to The Driveway for my 1:30 PM race. On the ride over all I could think about was that this was going to be a “race of nutrition”, since the temperature was well over 100 degrees.

CommunityNewsRacingTeam Hotel San José Gains New Sponsors For 2010
Gary Fisher Will Be Part Of Launch Party Friday In Austin
(Austin, Texas) – Team Hotel San José is now “Team Hotel San José/Mellow Johnny’s Presented by Subaru-Gary Fisher” for the 2010 season.
The addition of Mellow Johnny’s bicycle shop, automobile manufacturer Subaru and bicycle maker Gary Fisher reflects a commitment by the team’s management company, Redbud Sports, LLC, to build on the momentum from 2009, when the team won 50 races.
“Having the support of companies that are so easily integrated into the cycling scene is both exciting and satisfying,” Team Hotel San José/Mellow Johnny’s Presented by Subaru-Gary Fisher Executive Director Todd Reed said.
Title sponsor Hotel San José is a “hotel with soul” in Austin, Texas, where the team is headquartered. Built in 1939 as an “ultramodern motor court,” the boutique hotel has become part of the fabric in the city’s hippest neighborhood.

Thanks to all that came, I would strongly encourage other categories to organize something similar. We rode about 12 hours in 3 days, had two meals together, and learned a lot about each other on and off the bike. Ronnie posted some pictures, hopefully he can add them to our THSJ facebook page and JR took some as well that will be posted soon. Saturday’s ride was long 120 miles for some guys, at the halfway point we came across some “loose livestock”, we stopped for lunch and had to make our way through the herd of cattle. They had a few calves and were quite aggressive. I am not sure what would have done without the follow car. Ronnie documented this with a few photos, but we survived and Stefan won the sprint points for the cattle guard on that one. Sunday we rode east for just over an hour, we had a 20mph+ tailwind, then rode back home and did some laps on the nighter course for 3 more hours. Cody Foster has to get the award for best legs on Sunday, after doing the longest ride of his life Saturday he won both sprints on Sunday.
